If you drive in Newark, Delaware, you already know how relentless the sun gets on Route 1 and I-95. What you may not know is that your car’s side and rear windows let UVA rays through unless they have film on them. This guide covers Delaware’s 2026 window tint laws, what the science says about UV exposure in your vehicle, and why Professional Window Tinting in Newark is the right place to get it done.
Professional Window Tinting in Newark, Delaware, offers 3M Automotive Window Tinting and Paint Protection Film (PPF) installations. Additionally, we offer a glass protection product called GlassParency. There are many reasons why one might consider us for their PPF, window tint, and glass protection needs.
No Sales Tax in Delaware
Delaware has no state sales tax, and no city in Delaware adds one either, including Newark and Wilmington.
What this means for you: if you live in Maryland, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey and cross the border to have your car tinted at our Newark location, you pay no sales tax on the service.
Drivers from Elkton, Hockessin, Wilmington, and across New Castle County already make the trip to our shop at 9 Albe Drive specifically for this reason. If you’re close to the Delaware border, the math works in your favor.
Delaware Window Tint Laws in 2026: What’s Actually Legal
Delaware updated its window tint law on August 17, 2026, when Senate Substitute 1 for Senate Bill 255 was signed and took effect. Here is what is allowed now under Delaware Code Title 21, Section 4313:
- Front Side Windows: The driver and front passenger windows must let at least 50% of visible light through, measured through the glass and the film together. No medical waiver is needed for that level. The old limit was 70%.
- Rear Side Windows: Any darkness level is legal. You can go as dark as you want.
- Rear Windshield: Any darkness is permitted, but if tinted, dual side mirrors are required.
- Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed only above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line, typically the top few inches.
- Reflective/Mirrored Film: Not permitted on any window.
- VLT measures the percentage of visible light that passes through the glass and film combined. A higher VLT means a lighter, more transparent film. A lower VLT is darker. Delaware does not restrict how dark you go on rear windows: you could legally install 5% (limo-dark) tint on the back glass of any vehicle.
- Medical exemptions are still available for drivers who need front windows darker than 50%. A physician or optometrist must certify the need, and the exemption must be filed with the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles.
Why a 50% film is not a 50% window: factory glass is not 100% clear. Most vehicles already measure between 70% and 80% before any film goes on, and the law measures the glass and the film together. On glass that measures around 75%, a 70% film lands in the 50% to 53% range, which keeps you legal and means you will not have to remove the film to pass Delaware inspection. A 50% film on that same glass would put you under the limit.
Always verify your installation complies with current law. Reach out to our team if you have questions about what’s legal for your specific vehicle.
Why Delaware Drivers Have a Real UV Problem
Delaware is not a sunbelt state, but Newark drivers still get plenty of sun through their car windows, and most car glass does less to stop UV than people think.
UVA rays, the type linked to skin aging, deep tissue damage, and melanoma, penetrate standard automotive glass easily. Your windshield filters some UV, but your side windows and rear glass, unless treated with film, provide minimal protection during daily commutes.
3M Automotive Window Films block up to 99% of UV rays across their entire lineup. That means the film installed on your rear and side windows in our Newark shop provides measurable, real protection on every trip, whether you’re running to Christiana Mall, commuting through Glasgow, or making the drive down US-13.
Window film is one of the most consistent UV barriers you can add to your daily environment.

Best 3M Automotive Films Available at Our Newark Location
3M Crystalline Black Series
The flagship. The Crystalline Series, now sold as Crystalline Black (CR BLK), uses multi-layer optical film (MOF) nanotechnology: over 200 layers in a film thinner than a Post-It note. It rejects up to 64% of total solar energy and up to 98% of heat-producing infrared rays, according to 3M’s current brochure. We carry it in 70%, 50%, 40% and 30%.
Critically, it does this while remaining virtually clear, making it the ideal solution for Delaware drivers who want maximum performance on rear windows without making their vehicle look dramatically different.
3M Color Stable Series
Infused with ceramic nano-particles, the Color Stable Series rejects up to 64% of total solar energy and up to 99% of UV rays. It is engineered to resist the purple discoloration that cheaper dyed films develop over time, which is a common complaint among drivers who went with a budget option elsewhere.
3M Ceramic IR Series
The Ceramic IR Series rejects up to 66% of total solar energy and 95% of infrared rays. It carries the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, meeting the organization’s standards for UVA and UVB blocking. Non-metallic construction means zero interference with GPS, satellite radio, 5G, or any other electronics in your vehicle.
3M Obsidian Series
The Obsidian Series is built for privacy. Using 3M’s patented infused dye technology, it rejects up to 60% of solar energy and 99% of UV rays, and is available in shades that block up to 95% of visible light. Non-metallic, so it does not affect any electronics.
3M FX-HP Series
The FX-HP combines dyed and metalized layers for strong heat rejection at a more accessible price point. It rejects up to 65% of solar energy and 99% of UV rays, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to add real protection to your rear windows.

What About Paint Protection Film and GlassParency?
Automotive tint is not the only service we offer at our Newark location.
Paint Protection Film (PPF), also called clear bra, is a virtually invisible polyurethane film that protects your paint from chips, scratches, road debris, and key swipes. 3M Scotchgard PPF is self-healing for minor scratches and can be applied to full panels or targeted areas like the hood, fenders, door edges, and trunk ledge. If you’re driving on Delaware’s roads regularly, PPF preserves your investment.
GlassParency is a glass coating that fills the microscopic pores in your windshield and windows. It repels rain, mud, snow, and road spray, improving visibility and making ice far harder to form on winter mornings. Many customers in the Newark area add GlassParency to their front windshield at the same appointment as their tint installation.
Delaware Tint Law FAQ: Real Questions, Straight Answers
Can I tint my front windows in Delaware?
Yes. Under Delaware’s updated tint law, signed August 17, 2026, front side windows must let at least 50% of visible light through, measured through the glass and the film together, with no medical waiver needed. Factory glass is not fully clear, so a 70% film is usually what keeps you legal. For anything darker, a licensed physician or optometrist can certify a medical exemption through the Delaware DMV.
How dark can I go on rear windows?
There is no darkness limit on rear side windows or the rear windshield in Delaware. Any VLT is permitted. If you tint the rear windshield, you are required to have dual side mirrors.
Will window tint interfere with my GPS or phone signal?
Non-metallic films like the 3M Crystalline, Ceramic IR, and Obsidian series do not interfere with GPS, 5G, Bluetooth, satellite radio, or any other electronics. We always recommend non-metallic options for modern vehicles with advanced connectivity features.
Does window tint actually reduce interior heat?
Yes. Films like 3M Crystalline and Ceramic IR are built to reject infrared, the part of sunlight you feel as heat, so the cabin heats up less and the air conditioning has less work to do.
Is a VLT sticker required in Delaware?
Yes. Delaware law requires a sticker identifying legal tinting to be placed between the glass and film on the driver’s side window, plainly visible.
