The Delaware Tax Advantage: No Sales Tax Means Real Savings
Delaware is one of only 5 states in the U.S. with no sales tax — alongside Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. The state sales tax rate is 0%, confirmed by the Delaware Division of Revenue. There is no local sales tax either; Newark, Wilmington, and every city in Delaware operate at 0%.
What this means for you: if you live in Maryland, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey and cross the border to have your car tinted at our Newark location, you pay no sales tax on the service. In Maryland, the sales tax rate is 6%. In Pennsylvania, it’s 6%. On a $400–$600 tint job, that is a real $24–$36 back in your pocket.
Drivers from Elkton, Hockessin, Wilmington, and across New Castle County already make the trip to our shop at 9 Albe Drive specifically for this reason. If you’re close to the Delaware border, the math works in your favor.
Delaware Window Tint Laws in 2026: What’s Actually Legal
Delaware’s window tint laws have not changed heading into 2026 — and they are among the strictest in the country. Here is exactly what is and is not allowed under Delaware Code Title 21, Section 4313:
- Front Side Windows: No aftermarket tint is permitted. Only factory-installed tint at 70% Visible Light Transmission (VLT) or higher is legal on driver and front passenger windows.
- Rear Side Windows: Any darkness level is legal. You can go as dark as you want.
- Rear Windshield: Any darkness is permitted, but if tinted, dual side mirrors are required.
- Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed only above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line — typically the top few inches.
- Reflective/Mirrored Film: Not permitted on any window.
- VLT measures the percentage of visible light that passes through the glass and film combined. A higher VLT means a lighter, more transparent film. A lower VLT is darker. Delaware does not restrict how dark you go on rear windows — you could legally install 5% (limo-dark) tint on the back glass of any vehicle.
- Penalties for illegal tint range from $28.75 to $100 per offense under current enforcement.
- Medical exemptions are available. A physician or optometrist must certify the need, and the exemption must be filed with the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles.
Always verify your installation complies with current law. Reach out to our team if you have questions about what’s legal for your specific vehicle.
Why Delaware Drivers Have a Real UV Problem
Delaware is not a sunbelt state, but the UV exposure numbers tell a different story.
Research published in the International Journal of Cancer and cited by the American Cancer Society ranks Delaware 3rd in the nation for UV-attributable melanoma incidence, with 28.2 cases per 100,000 people — above states like Florida and California. The Delaware Department of Public Health confirms the state’s melanoma rate is among the 5th highest nationally, noting that UV exposure from the sun is the leading environmental factor in skin cancer development.
Driving contributes to this exposure more than most people realize. UVA rays — the type linked to skin aging, deep tissue damage, and melanoma — penetrate standard automotive glass easily. Your windshield filters some UV, but your side windows and rear glass, unless treated with film, provide minimal protection during daily commutes.
3M Automotive Window Films block up to 99% of UV rays across their entire lineup. That means the film installed on your rear and side windows in our Newark shop provides measurable, real protection on every trip — whether you’re running to Christiana Mall, commuting through Glasgow, or making the drive down US-13.
Delaware’s own Department of Health acknowledges UV protection as a core preventive health measure. Window film is one of the most consistent UV barriers you can add to your daily environment.

Best 3M Automotive Films Available at Our Newark Location
3M Crystalline Series
The flagship. The Crystalline Series uses multi-layer optical film (MOF) nanotechnology — over 200 layers in a film thinner than a Post-It note. It rejects up to 64% of total solar energy and up to 99% of infrared heat-generating rays, which can reduce interior cabin temperature by up to 47°F without running the air conditioner.
Critically, it does this while remaining virtually clear — making it the ideal solution for Delaware drivers who want maximum performance on rear windows without making their vehicle look dramatically different. It carries 3M’s limited lifetime warranty for original vehicle owners through authorized installers.
3M Color Stable Series
Infused with ceramic nano-particles, the Color Stable Series rejects up to 64% of total solar energy and up to 99% of UV rays. It is engineered to resist the purple discoloration that cheaper dyed films develop over time, which is a common complaint among drivers who went with a budget option elsewhere.
3M Ceramic IR Series
The Ceramic IR Series rejects up to 66% of total solar energy and 95% of infrared rays. It carries the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, meeting the organization’s standards for UVA and UVB blocking. Non-metallic construction means zero interference with GPS, satellite radio, 5G, or any other electronics in your vehicle.
3M Obsidian Series
The Obsidian Series is built for privacy. Using 3M’s patented infused dye technology, it rejects up to 60% of solar energy and 99% of UV rays, and is available in shades that block up to 95% of visible light. Non-metallic, so it does not affect any electronics.
3M FX-HP Series
The FX-HP combines dyed and metalized layers for strong heat rejection at a more accessible price point. It rejects up to 65% of solar energy and 99% of UV rays, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to add real protection to your rear windows.

What About Paint Protection Film and GlassParency?
Automotive tint is not the only service we offer at our Newark location.
Paint Protection Film (PPF) — also called clear bra — is a virtually invisible polyurethane film that protects your paint from chips, scratches, road debris, and key swipes. 3M Scotchgard PPF is self-healing for minor scratches and can be applied to full panels or targeted areas like the hood, fenders, door edges, and trunk ledge. If you’re driving on Delaware’s roads regularly, PPF preserves your investment.
GlassParency is a glass coating that fills the microscopic pores in your windshield and windows. It repels rain, mud, snow, and road spray — improving visibility and making ice far harder to form on winter mornings. Many customers in the Newark area add GlassParency to their front windshield at the same appointment as their tint installation.
Delaware Tint Law FAQ: Real Questions, Straight Answers
No aftermarket tint is allowed on front side windows in Delaware. Only factory-installed glass at 70% VLT or higher is permitted. If you have a medical condition requiring additional UV protection, a licensed physician or optometrist can certify a medical exemption through the Delaware DMV.
There is no darkness limit on rear side windows or the rear windshield in Delaware. Any VLT is permitted. If you tint the rear windshield, you are required to have dual side mirrors.
Non-metallic films like the 3M Crystalline, Ceramic IR, and Obsidian series do not interfere with GPS, 5G, Bluetooth, satellite radio, or any other electronics. We always recommend non-metallic options for modern vehicles with advanced connectivity features.
Yes, measurably. The 3M Crystalline Series alone can reduce interior cabin temperature by up to 47°F compared to untinted glass. Less heat means less reliance on air conditioning, which translates to better fuel efficiency over time.
Yes. Delaware law requires a sticker identifying legal tinting to be placed between the glass and film on the driver’s side window, plainly visible.
